900 Arnoldstown Road, Jefferson MD 21755 (Gathland State Park)
This Sept 14, 1862, battle bought time for Robert E. Lee to consolidate his scattered army at Sharpsburg during the final stage of the Maryland Campaign. Confederates defended three South Mountain gaps against a suddenly aggressive Union army under Gen. George McClellan pursuing from Frederick. Fierce fighting at Crampton's, Fox's and Turner's Gaps delayed the Union advance a critical day.
Today interpretation at Washington Monument and Gathland State Parks interpret the scene. The unusual Correspondents Arch, dedicated to Civil War journalists, stands at Gathland State Park.
Park open 8 am-sunset. Parking fees at some locations.
