Confederate defenders were unable to hold off a March 19, 1862, army-navy assault on this important tidewater river town. The Union army occupied New Bern for the rest of the war and mounted various inland campaigns from there. Part of the battlefield featuring some of the Confederate defenses has been preserved in a park east of town. Download walking tour map from the website below.
