An interpreted walking trail beginning at the historic Shelton House (Rural Plains) takes visitors through the Federal trenches established during the fighting near Totopotomoy Creek May 29-30, 1864. The fighting here is often overlooked, sandwiched between the bloodbaths at Spotysylvania and Cold Harbor. Rural Plains, built about 1723, suffered damage during the battle and is open on special occasions.
