Confederates under Gen. Braxton Bragg decisively whipped Gen. William Rosecran's Union army Sept 19-20, 1863. A strong late stand by Union Gen. George Thomas prevented a complete rout. Nearly 35,000 casualties were recorded here, second only to Gettysburg in Civil War battles. The nearly 10,000-acre park includes most of the critical battle areas.

Park open daylight hours. Chickamauga visitor center open 8:30 am-5 pm daily. Free.
