Fort Pulaski National Monument

US 80, Chatham County GA (about 15 miles east of Savannah)

Federal fort built to guard Savanna in 1847 was taken by Georgians in December 1860. It was retaken in April 1862 after a bombardment that proved masonry fortifications were useless against modern artillery weapons. Trails explore the area.

Visitor center open 9 am–5 pm daily, extended during the summer. $5/person.
