East Chestnut and River streets, Carthage MO 64836
This small park is on the spot of some of the last fighting during a running battle fought July 5, 1861. Outnumbered Union troops under Col. Franz Sigel managed to escape a much larger Confederate force after a series of skirmishes ending here. A kiosk in the park describes the fighting. Park open daylight hours.
Note: A museum in town (205 Grant St) is devoted to the battle. See displays, a mural and artifacts at the Carthage Civil War Museum
Museum open Tuesday-Saturday 8:30 am-5 pm and Sunday 1-5 pm.
