Union forces marching from Nashville dislodged the Confederates from their Murfreesboro base during vicious fighting Dec 31, 1862–Jan 2, 1863. The battle opened up Middle Tennessee to Union occupation. The park tour road covers significant areas of the fighting and the remains of Fort Rosecrans, built after the battle to protect a vast Union supply base here.
